Sedation tattoos

Sedation tattoos in Bali

A full back, a full front, a set of sleeves or your whole body, finished pain-free while you sleep. From $6,000 AUD all inclusive, in a purpose built theatre inside a Denpasar hospital with the medical team on site.

Sedation tattoos

Sleep through it, wake up with the work done

Big work that would take days in the chair, done in one session at RSK Bedah Dharma Usadha Sidhi, a surgical hospital in Denpasar. A specialist anaesthetist puts you under a full general anaesthetic and watches you the whole time, while a team of our artists tattoo you at once. The more skin being covered, the more artists, and the anaesthetist always has the final say on how long you stay under. A recent client had a full back and both legs done in 8 hours with 6 artists. That's 48 hours of tattooing, more than 6 full days in a studio chair. More than 100 sessions done so far.

How it works, start to finish

  • Before your trip: a short booking form, then your deposit, then the hospital's pre-anaesthesia form, which you email straight to the anaesthetist. Land in Bali at least 3 days before your session, and we pick you up free from the airport
  • At least 2 days before: we drive you to the hospital for your medical check and pre-op tests (check-ups run through the day, the last around 3pm). You pay the balance once you're cleared
  • Session day: we drive you to the hospital for a 10am arrival. Lock in your design with the artists, then they prep your skin and apply the stencils
  • From around midday: a team of our artists tattoo at once while a specialist anaesthetist keeps you under and monitored
  • Overnight: you recover in the ICU, then the next day we drive you back to your accommodation

What it costs

Packages start at $6,000 AUD, all inclusive, for a starter package. A full back or a full front (chest and stomach) is $7,500, up to $25,000 for a full body. The table below shows every package.

Prices are for black and grey. Full colour adds 10% to the package price. A $2,000 deposit secures your hospital date. Enquire and we'll send you the full information pack.

You must be 19 or older. Suitability is decided by the hospital's anaesthetist after your medical check, not by us.

The spots that hurt the most

Tattoo pain charts agree on where it hurts: the ribs, armpit, spine and sternum, hands and fingers, feet and ankles, shins, knees and elbows (including the inside of the elbow), and the head, neck and throat. The skin is thin, the nerve endings are packed in and the bone sits right under the surface. Every full arm sleeve runs through the elbow and inner arm, every full leg runs through the knee, shin and ankle, and a full front covers the sternum. Under sedation you sleep through all of it. Not sure what fits your piece? Message us on WhatsApp.

Important health information

A sedation tattoo is done under general anaesthetic in a surgical hospital, so it's a medical procedure like any other. At least 2 days before your session you have a full medical check at the hospital, and the anaesthetist makes sure it's right for you before anything goes ahead. Your medical details stay between you and the hospital. Have a chat with your GP before you commit. This page is general information, not medical advice.

Sedation questions

What people ask before booking a sedation tattoo

Is a sedation tattoo safe?

It's done in a surgical hospital with a specialist anaesthetist watching you the whole time, an ICU for recovery and an ambulance on site. It's still a general anaesthetic, so it carries the same kind of risks as any operation. That's why every client sends the hospital's pre-anaesthesia form to the anaesthetist well before they fly, and has a full medical check at the hospital at least 2 days before their session, and the doctor has the final say.

Who does the anaesthesia?

One of the hospital's specialist anaesthetists. It's a full general anaesthetic with a breathing tube, and the anaesthetist stays in the room from start to finish while our artists work.

How long does a sedation tattoo take?

Most sessions run for several hours while you sleep, and the anaesthetist has the final say on how long you stay under. We use as many artists as can fit around you, so your time under is as short as possible. A full back and front takes longer, because you are turned over halfway. Even a full body, the longest job, is done in one session with up to 10 artists.

What if my session has to stop early?

Every package is planned to finish in one session, even a full body. If the anaesthetist ever stops early for your safety, we finish the rest in our Kuta studio at no extra cost.

Who can have one?

You need to be 19 or older. We ask a few quick health questions early on, and the hospital does your full medical check at least 2 days before your session, with blood tests and an ECG. The anaesthetist has the final say.

How much is the deposit?

It's $2,000 on every package. It books your hospital date and comes off your package price, and the balance is paid at the hospital once your medical check is clear. See our booking terms.

What if the doctor says no?

It's never happened in more than 100 sessions. If it ever did, you wouldn't pay the balance, and your deposit would go towards a tattoo in our Kuta studio. See our booking terms.

What if I change my mind or need to cancel?

You can move your date to any time within 12 months. Your deposit pays for your hospital booking, so it can't be refunded. All the details are in our booking terms.

What if the hospital has to move my session?

It's rare. If it ever happens, we rebook you at no cost, within your trip where we can or on a new date that suits you. See our booking terms.

Any tips for the first few nights after?

Bring or buy a waterproof under-blanket and some thick sheets, and use them in place of the hotel or villa bedding. Fresh tattoos weep for the first couple of nights, so this keeps the hotel linen clean. Skip alcohol while you heal too, because it thins your blood.

Do I need to fast before my session?

Yes. Have a light breakfast on the morning of your session, then don't eat anything after that. Keep sipping water until the hospital tells you to stop, and follow any instructions they give you at your medical check.

How do I pay the balance?

Once your medical checks are clear, you pay at the hospital by card with no surcharge, or in cash in rupiah. Prefer to sort it before you fly? You can pay by bank transfer a week ahead. We'll talk you through the easiest option for you.

Will it hurt?

You won't feel anything while it's being done. Afterwards it will be sore as it heals, like any big tattoo, and the hospital can give you pain relief tablets if you need them.

How long before I can fly home?

We recommend about 7 days in Bali after your session. Most people are fine to fly after 3 to 4 days if they feel well and the anaesthetist is happy. The extra days give your body more time to recover and leave room to move your session if the hospital ever needs to. Land at least 3 days before your session too, so there's time for your medical check.

What's included in the price?

The tattoo, the medical check and tests, the anaesthetist, the theatre, your ICU recovery and free airport pick-up to your accommodation, plus free transport to and from the hospital for your medical check and your session. The only possible extra is pain relief tablets afterwards if you need them.

How many have you done?

More than 100 sedation sessions so far. All the hospital forms are in English, and you can ask the anaesthetist anything at your medical check.

Do small colour details count as full colour?

No. Small colour highlights, like red eyes on a black and grey piece, are included free up to about 10% of the design. If colour covers 11% to 24% of the piece, you pay half the colour fee. Full colour pricing only applies once colour covers 25% or more.

Can my partner stay at the hospital with me?

Yes. Your partner or a friend can stay at the hospital overnight while you're in theatre and recovering. There's a comfortable area for them to wait, with convenience stores close by.

Can you cover up or refresh an existing tattoo?

Absolutely. Cover-ups and freshening up older work can all be part of your sedation session. Send clear photos of your existing tattoos with your enquiry so the artists can plan around them.

Do I choose my own design?

Yes. If you already have a finished design, bring it. Plenty of clients have their own designer draw it up before the trip. Or send us your ideas and reference pictures and the artists will plan it with you. The final size and placement are locked in with the artists on the morning of your session, before you go under.

Can I come from the UK, Europe or the USA?

Yes, clients fly in from all over. Prices are shown in Australian dollars. Your deposit is charged in AUD by secure Stripe link, and the balance is paid at the hospital in rupiah, by card or cash. Everything is arranged by WhatsApp and email before you travel, and all the hospital forms are in English.

When should I book my flights?

Once your booking form is back and your deposit is paid. Land in Bali at least 3 days before your session, because your medical check is done at the hospital at least 2 days before it. Then allow about 7 days in Bali afterwards, and never less than 3 to 4 days, before you fly home.

Thinking about a sedation piece?

Tell us what you'd like done and when you're in Bali. We'll send the full information pack, including the hospital process, the pre-op check and a quote for your piece.
